Have a pet that you can’t part with? Does a small campus with a view appeal to you? Are you an independent, self-motivated student? If you’re ready to break with college tradition on a nontraditional campus, then you should consider attending Eckerd College. With its unique college culture and academic focus, it is a great option for quirky, independent thinkers.

Flanked by the waters of Frenchman’s Creek and Boca Ciega Bay, Eckerd College can be found in St. Petersburg, Florida. Even though it is three miles from Gulf of Mexico beaches, it has its own 100-yard white sand beach on campus. This is where teachers push outdoor learning, and recreation as a means of learning. Teachers will often hold classes outside under the trees, and students can be seen studying in the various hammocks strewn about campus. Eckerd College holds strong to its motto “Think Outside.” It’s the place for students to think outside of classrooms and out of the box.

In keeping with its unique approach to learning, the entire campus is shoe-optional and 100% pet-friendly. Students can be seen in and out of buildings, with or without shoes, with a variety of pets that accompany them everywhere on campus. Students are allowed to bring pets starting their second semester of their freshman year. Whenever the number of students on campus is reported, there is also a listing of the number and kind of pets on campus for that academic year. There are even two ceremonies for these special friends: Pet Blessing at the beginning of the year and Pet Graduation once the student earns their degree.

Worried that you won’t have anything to do between classes or on weekends? Think again. Students, their families, and friends of students can check out boats, kayaks, and other equipment for free. There is even an annual event that brings the entire campus together to enjoy water festivities, known as Springtopia. This event, held during the last two weeks of the spring semester, is a favorite among students and staff.

Eckerd is a school for leaders, servants of the community, and those of strong character. If this campus culture and philosophy resonates with you, then gear up for a nontraditional ride into your future. For more information, visit www.eckerd.edu and contact your CAA coaches.
