Seven Habits of Highly Effective Studiers

By Coach Paul   In the world of college admissions, your grades are of the utmost importance. But how do you get the most out of your study time? CAA offers our clients an assessment to help them learn more about their study habits and create a study plan that meets their own needs. Here are a few of the tips that we talk about with our students as they seek to study more effectively. These are things that are generally within your control that can have a big impact.   Location – Have you thought about where you choose to study? Your surroundings can have an impact on your overall focus. Do you study in your room, at the library, or outdoors to be around nature? Think about your own preferences when selecting your ideal place for study time.   Timing – Are you one of those people who is alert first thing in the morning? Do you tend to have a burst of energy at night? These are things to consider as you think about your ideal time of day to spend time studying. If you are a morning person but always try to study late at night, it may lessen the quality of the time you spend.   Lighting – This is an area that not everyone considers. Do you prefer well-lit surroundings when you study, or do you prefer more dim lighting? If you need good lighting to read but always study in a dark place, you won’t learn as well. Think about what the solution may be for you. You may need to change the location of your study spot depending on your answer, or you may need to buy extra lighting to enhance your current study location.   Noise-level – Do you like to have music playing as you study? Do you need it to be as quiet as possible in order to focus? This is another important question to ask yourself. Maybe you’re the studier who puts on music in your room, but you end up paying attention to the song rather than what you’re reading. If you don’t have access to a quiet study space, soft music without words could help to drown out surrounding noises.   Motivation– Why do you study? It sounds like a weird question, but what is your reason? Are you doing it because of obligation, internal motivation, to please your teacher, to please your parents, or some other reason? Some are motivated by the knowledge that studying now will help them reach a career goal. Thinking about the why can help you get the motivation you need.   Snacks –Is it a distraction for you to eat while studying? Maybe you need to have food to help you stay engaged and have energy? If you choose to eat while you study, we recommend more healthy snacks. For some, a glass of water to sip while studying can be just as effective.   Study Groups – Some students really enjoy studying with a group of friends, but is it effective? It can really depend on the group and the person. While friends are fun to hang out with, do you feel you get more accomplished on your own? Or do you find benefit in hearing a concept explained in a group setting? Consider what really helps you as you plan.   There is not only one way to study, so it is important to find the way that works best for you.
